1954 Omega Seamaster Calendar Automatic – Calibre 355 Bumper.
The early 1950s marked the emergence of the Seamaster as Omega's flagship automatic wristwatch, combining elegant styling with robust construction and some of the finest automatic movements available at the time. This 1954 Omega Seamaster Calendar is an excellent example from that period and is powered by the highly regarded Omega calibre 355 bumper automatic movement.
The watch is housed in a stainless steel case with gold-capped lugs and a solid gold bezel, giving it an appearance that is both luxurious and understated. The gold capping remains in very good condition with no rub-through visible, while the case itself shows only the light micro-scratches expected from decades of careful ownership. There are no dings or significant marks.
One of the most attractive features of this watch is its uncommon dial layout. The date aperture is positioned at six o'clock, a configuration seen far less frequently than the more familiar three o'clock date arrangement. This creates a pleasing symmetry and gives the watch a distinctive character that immediately sets it apart from most contemporary Seamaster models.
The original dial has aged naturally over the years and retains considerable charm. Applied gold Arabic numerals at 12, 3 and 9 are complemented by applied gold arrowhead hour markers with luminous tips. The gold Dauphine hands remain present, while the black printed minute track frames the dial beautifully. There is some loss to the dial printing, as shown in the photographs, but this is reflected in the watch's honest and untouched appearance.
The watch retains its original Omega crown, although the gold capping on the crown has worn with age.
Internally, the stainless steel case is fully signed and marked by Omega.
At the heart of the watch is the Omega calibre 355 bumper automatic movement. These early automatic movements are fascinating pieces of horological engineering, using a semi-rotating weighted rotor that gently "bumps" against springs at either end of its travel. They represent an important stage in the development of the modern self-winding wristwatch and remain highly collectable today.
The movement is running in full working order and the watch is fitted with a new genuine leather strap.
This is an attractive and increasingly scarce early Seamaster Calendar, combining the charm of Omega's bumper automatic era with an unusual six o'clock date display and a particularly appealing steel and gold case design.
A distinctive 1950s Omega that offers rarity, character and genuine vintage presence in equal measure.
