1950 Omega Automatic – New Old Stock – Original Box & Strap.
Omega automatic wristwatch manufactured in 1950 and preserved in genuine New Old Stock condition.
Finding a seventy-five-year-old watch in such a state of preservation is unusual. Finding one still accompanied by its original Omega presentation box, original Omega strap and original retailer identification is rarer still.
The stainless steel case is fitted with a solid gold bezel and remains in remarkable condition. The watch shows virtually none of the wear normally associated with a piece of this age. The sharpness of the case, the untouched appearance of the dial and the overall presentation strongly suggest that this watch spent most of its life safely stored rather than worn.
The silver dial is beautifully restrained and perfectly proportioned. Applied gold Arabic numerals at 12, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 are complemented by applied gold hour markers and matching gold hands. The applied Omega logo sits above the black Omega Automatic script. A fine minute track surrounds the centre section of the dial, giving the watch an elegance that is distinctly Omega and distinctly of its period.
At 35mm excluding the crown, this is a notably larger watch than many contemporaries from 1950 and wears surprisingly well on a modern wrist. The slim bezel design allows the dial to occupy much of the visible surface, creating a presence beyond its measured diameter.
The watch retains its original Omega strap, itself a rarity after more than seven decades. Also included is the original Omega presentation box bearing the retailer's label for Sundströms of Sandviken, Sweden.
Many vintage Omegas survive. Far fewer survive untouched. Watches such as this provide a glimpse of what an Omega customer would have seen when opening the box in 1950.
A remarkable survivor from the golden age of Omega watchmaking.
