H Moser & Cie have a long history of watch production dating back to 1828 when they were established in St Petersburg, Russia by Swiss born Heinrich Moser. A year later, a wise Moser established his watchmaking factory at Le Locke, Switzerland so when the main company was nationalised during the Russian Revolution in 1918, watch production was able to continue. Today Moser offer a range of wrist watches and are universally acknowledges for their expertise and policy of manufacturing everything in-house. A link to todays Moser site and a review of one of their watches is included below.
The movement inside this watch was manufactured by Omega and bought in by Moser. It probably wasn't practical for them to manufacture movements of all sizes especially so when production numbers would have been very low as in this goliath 8 day piece. It's not marked Omega but that's not unusual at this time. It is however visually identical to the Omega 30'''8-D L 15P. Numbered 3162821 dates it to between 1906 and 1909 - more than likely 1906. This predates the Russian Revolution and as the dial is marked 8 days in Russian, it was probably made for the Russian market. In all likelyhood it was intended to be fitted into a car.
With a case diameter of 75mm and a weight of 366gms this is a true goliath and certainly not a standard pocket watch. It's in exceptionally good original condition and had genuinely seen very little use. It has a new hand-made bevel edge crystal (the original was sadly smashed in transit). The dial is virtually unmarked and displays large black Arabic numbers. No dial repairs or hairline cracks. Black steel hands with a black seconds hand set in a sunken sub-dial at 6. Signed H Moser & Cie in black and 8 days (in Russian) in red.
The case is superb with no dints and only very minor scratches. Sturdy long neck stem, giant Lepine crown with well defined edges and a tight bow. Slight marks to where the case back and front have been opened. The case-back and dust cover both share the same serial number.
The Omega movement is in fine condition and has been fully serviced. The reference Omega movement can be observed on page 796 Omega A Journey Through Time.
A very early and rare time piece from a highly regarded manufacturer in great overall condition.
