You have to imagine what life was like when this was manufactured. No technology and no personal gadgets. No home phones, no television, no radio broadcasts. The technology and talking point of the day was their watch! Pocket watches were still far more popular than wrist watches and to own a solid gold one you had to be someone very special. For it to be a chronometer you were joining a very exclusive club. Whilst no figures exist I would guess that less the one-tenth of 1% of pocket watches were chronometers. That's one in one thousand. Probably far less than that. The point is, in the day, this was the best of the best.
Manufactured between 1916 and 1923 (most likely towards midway) this luxurious timepiece is both highly decorative and highly functional. After manufacture, the ébauche (watch movement) was exported to the USA to be fitted with a 14k solid gold case manufactured by world-renowned case-makers Wadsworth. Restrictions at the time prevented Omega from exporting watches with cases made of precious metals. It's all history and part of the appeal of these old watches but it must have been someone of substance who bought it new. Its life is a mystery and how it ended up in Romania where I bought it heaven only knows!
The case is in great worn condition. Rare 10 sided with chased reed bezel. No dints or large scratches. No personal inscription on the rear. All original. Inside the snap-on case back it is marked Wadsworth and 14 Karat.
Superb ornate dial again in great condition, gently aged with patina. Large, easy to read, raised Arabic numerals possibly solid gold. Minutes represented by tiny drilled indentations. Two-tone gold coloured/textured dial. Very large Guilloche inner section. Recessed small seconds with a Guilloche centre. Beautiful blues steel Cathedral hands. Signed Omega and Swiss Made.
Inside is the Omega 19''' NN LX 21P Chronometer movement. In equally excellent condition. This chronometer calibre is a masterpiece of fine engineering and was manufactured and finished specifically for chronometer performance. Serpentine bridges with a graduated cam snail index. A masterpiece!
A fine piece of Omega heritage.
